Inspired from the success of Chinese handset makers such as Xiaomi, Lenovo, LeEco in India, Transsion Holdings has forayed into the Indian market with the launch of a feature and budget smartphone under the itel branding. The itel products promise to deliver affordable yet feature-driven mobile phones to rural and semi-urban Indian consumers. Recently, it has launched Selfie Pro it1511 and the company was kind enough to send the device for review. Priced at R6,999, the Selfie Pro it1511 offers
Android 6.0 Marshmallow, has a LED flashlight on front and is 4G LTE enabled. But will it be able to carve out a place for itself in the most competitive price-segment? Let us look into the device.
Out of the box, the device looks elegant. The compact design, the matte finish on the back panel makes it a perfect fit into the hands. The silver coloured frame that runs around the sides further adds to the beauty. The front of the phone is dominated by a 5-inch display with a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The display quality is fairly decent but could not match the visual experience offered by some of its nearest rivals.
The front also houses a front camera on the top, while three capacitive touch keys are placed in the bottom. There is space for a 3.5 mm headset jack and a micro USB charger port on the top edge. The power key is placed at the right edge while the left has space for volume rocker keys. The detachable rear panel is home to itel branding along with rear camera. The device is neither too heavy nor too slim. It is comfortable to hold and operate and it is non-slippery at the same time.
Interestingly, at this price point, the Selfie Pro it1511 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and its entrails are powered by a 1 GHz MediaTek quad-core processor. The device comes with 1 GB RAM and has 8 GB capacity for internal storage that can be expanded upto 32 GB with the help of microSD card.
During the review period, Selfie Pro it1511 handled basic functions without any hiccup. In fact, we could play popular games without any sluggishness or sign of heat. But at times we struggled while doing multiple tasking or switching between the apps.
On the camera front, Selfie Pro it1511 comes with a 8-megapixel auto focus rear camera whereas the front camera is a 2-megapixel with fixed-focus. Some of the test pictures that I took outdoors, the camera did perform decent but lacks in capturing details while shooting indoor especially when the lighting conditions are not conducive. But, overall, the phone does not let you down as it captures fairly sharp and clear photo.
Selfie Pro it1511 supports 4G networks, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth and USB. The phone is packed with a removal battery of 2500 mAh which offer decent standby time and could last between 4-6 hours with multitasking and continuous data usage. While Selfie Pro it1511 specifications are similar to those of its closet rivals. It offers a bright HD display, good camera performance but lags in multitasking and gaming performance. Broadly, it is fast, sturdy, reasonably responsive and decent phone. In my week long evaluation, it handled everything smoothly without any lag.
